Dr. Edwin C. Epps
As Blanche DuBois said of herself in Tennessee Williams's classic American play A Streetcar Named Desire, every old ballpark has always "depended upon the kindness of strangers." Even a storied wooden grandstand stadium like Duncan Park--which is generously supported by the kindness of the City of Spartanburg and Spartanburg County School District Seven, the Friends of Duncan Park, Play. Advocate. Live Well. [PAL]

Duncan Park Needs YOUR Help!
Advocate. Live Well. [PAL] Spartanburg, and residents in its adjacent neighborhoods--encounters unanticipated and extraordinary needs from time to time.
In addition to these usual friends of Duncan Park stadium and the larger park campus itself, benefactors and supporters over the years have included Spartanburg American Legion Post 28, philanthropies like the Harry Dallara Foundation and the Mary Black Foundation, corporate members of OneSpartanburg, the Spartanburg County Public Library, Hillbrook Baseball, and others.
During the week of Spring Break 2025 Duncan Park's friends at the Youth Sports Bureau will provide another opportunity for local youth and adults to pitch in and contribute to the maintenance of this 100+-year-old facility. The poster reproduced below gives details.

This clean-up event will help prepare Duncan Park stadium for the public dedication of the renovated and expanded youth ballfield complex beyond the right field wall, a project sponsored by the Harry Dallara Foundation and celebrated by a special Dedication Ceremony to be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025. More to come about this ceremony in Beautiful Duncan Park Blog Post No. 23.
In addition to providing a welcome public service for the old stadium, the April clean-up week will also accommodate area young people who will remain in Spartanburg during this year's Spring Break week and who might not have other ways to spend their time off from schoolwork. Youth, their parents, and other adults who would like more information about this worthwhile activity should contact Luther Norman, the Director of the Youth Sports Bureau at (864) 205-7249 or youthsportsbureau@yahoo.com; or Kim Brown, the City of Spartanburg's Director of Parks, Recreation, and Special Events, at (864) 562-4059 or kmoultrie@cityofspartanburg.org.
