American Legion Post 28 Baseball
Dr. Edwin C. Epps
American Legion Post 28 Athletic Director John Barron reminds me that this summer will mark the centennial of American Legion Baseball, which began nationally in 1925 and opened play here in the Hub City at Duncan Park field in 1933. Since then Post 28 has played without interruption every year except one.

American Legion Baseball Is Alive and Well at Duncan Park. . . .
. . . . and play begins soon!
American Legion Post 28 Athletic Director John Barron reminds me that this summer will mark the centennial of American Legion Baseball, which began nationally in 1925 and opened play here in the Hub City at Duncan Park field in 1933. Since then Post 28 has played without interruption every year except one.

This year's season begins on June 9th and continues, including playoffs, into August. The entire schedule of games in each of the Legion's Palmetto State Leagues is available online at the South Carolina American Legion Baseball website: https://scalb.org/teams/default.asp?u=SOUTHCAROLI-BASEBALL&s=baseball&p=schedule&d=ALL
AD Barron sends along the following information: We are excited to announce the start of the 2025 American Legion Baseball season—our 100th year of proud tradition and excellence on the diamond. If you are between the ages of 13 and 19 and attend Spartanburg High, Dorman High, or Broome High, we invite you to be part of one of the most storied baseball programs in the country.
New Coaches for the 2025 Season:
- Senior Team – Mustangs: Coached by Henry Lech, a retired U.S. Army veteran who recently moved to Duncan Park. Coach Lech brings a wealth of athletic experience and leadership honed through years of service and dedication—skills he’s eager to bring to the field.
- Junior Team: Led by Chris Raymond, a teacher at Oakbrook Prep and a retired officer from the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. Coach Raymond is a former American Legion Baseball player himself and brings unmatched passion and commitment to mentoring young athletes.
Key Dates and Information:
- Tryouts for both the Junior and Senior teams will begin in mid-May 2025. Stay tuned for official dates and times.
- The Senior Team schedule is already posted and available at www.scalb.com.
- The Junior Team schedule is currently in development and will be announced soon.
We encourage all interested players to seriously consider playing Legion Baseball this season. This is a once-in-a-century opportunity to be part of our 100th season, joining a proud tradition shared by many of baseball’s greatest names.
Come be a part of something bigger than the game—play Legion Baseball.

Post 28 Baseball can always use assistance in the form of volunteers and donations. At best Legion ball is a break-even undertaking, and this summer that will be truer than ever since the team will be competing for attention, fans, and ticket income with the new Hub City Spartanburgers downtown at Fifth Third Park.
Local historians of the national pastime will know that Textile League standout and Spartanburg Peaches ballplayer Ty Wood played for Post 28. So did Wayne Tolleson, who played the infield for the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox, and the Texas Rangers; Wayne's son Steven, who played for the Oakland Athletics, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Toronto Blue Jays; and Terry Hughes, drafted by the Chicago Cubs. Help AD Barron, the local high school and college players who take the field for Post 28, and the parents and grandparents of these young men maintain the traditions of Legion Baseball here in Spartanburg. John will also sincerely appreciate any checks, Cash App payments, or Zelle deposits that you would like to send his way!
