Welcome!
Duncan Park stadium was constructed in 1926 and is listed on the U. S. Park Service's National Register of Historic Places. It is situated on land donated to the City of Spartanburg, South Carolina, by the family of Major David R. Duncan in 1923.
In the early 2000s the stadium was on the verge of being demolished because of its deteriorating condition, the absence of a professional team willing to contribute to its upkeep, and the uncertainty of funding for future maintenance, renovation, and restoration. Fortunately a partnership established in a Letter of Intent signed by The City of Spartanburg and Spartanburg County School District Seven prevented the destruction of this local icon, the oldest wooden grandstand stadium in South Carolina and one of the oldest in the nation.
In the summer of 2021 the Coastal Plain League team The Spartanburgers took the field at Duncan Park, but this turned out to be a failed one-year experiment. Since then the City, School District Seven, and a number of local organizations and individuals have endeavored to secure another permanent tenant to ensure the long term survival of the facility.
This blog seeks to preserve the rich history of Duncan Park stadium as well as to help facilitate its survival for the enjoyment of future generations of The Hub City.
